Bolt-On Acquisition

When a larger contractor or service company purchases a smaller subcontractor to expand its capabilities or regional footprint. For field crews, this often means changes to payroll systems, safety programmes, or preferred vendor lists. Existing contracts may be absorbed or renegotiated under the acquiring company's terms.

Related Terms

Subsea Tieback

Industry

A pipeline or flow line system that connects a new offshore wellhead or satellite field back to an existing production facility or platform, allowing operators to develop remote reserves without building standalone infrastructure. For subcontractors, tiebacks often involve specialised subsea installation, inspection, and maintenance scopes that require certified divers, ROV crews, or subsea engineering support.

Wellsite Services

Industry

On-location support work performed at an active drill site, including safety watch, equipment operation, and logistics. Subcontractors are typically mobilised on short notice and paid on a day-rate basis. Scope can shift quickly, so clear change-order processes are essential.

765-Kv Transmission Line

Industry

An extra-high-voltage overhead power line used to move large amounts of electricity across long distances. Subcontractors working near these lines face strict safety exclusion zones and require specialised certifications. Energised line work typically demands utility-approved crews and additional compliance documentation.

Cathodic Protection

Industry

A corrosion control method that uses electrical current to protect buried or submerged metal infrastructure like pipelines and tanks. Subcontractors installing or maintaining CP (Cathodic Protection) systems must hold recognised certifications. Inspections and anode replacements are common billable scopes in pipeline integrity contracts.

SSC (Sulfide Stress Cracking)

Industry

A form of metal cracking caused by hydrogen sulphide (H₂S) exposure under stress, common in sour gas environments. Subcontractors must use SSC-resistant materials and equipment rated for sour service on these sites. Non-compliant tools or components can fail catastrophically, creating serious liability and safety risks.

Advanced Conductors

Industry

Large-diameter steel casings driven into the ground before main drilling begins to stabilise the wellbore and prevent surface collapse. Subcontractors involved in conductor installation, welding, or pile-driving work are typically mobilised in this early phase. Securing this scope early can anchor longer project commitments on a well site.
