Industry Glossary Term

Acre-Feet

A volume measurement equal to one acre of surface area filled one foot deep, roughly 1,233 cubic metres. Common in water management contracts for tailings ponds, frac water storage, and site remediation. Subcontractors may be scoped and billed based on acre-feet of material moved or treated.

Related Terms

Load Growth

Industry

A gradual increase in power demand on a site's electrical system as more equipment and crews are added. Subcontractors must plan for load growth when sizing temporary power installations or generators. Failing to account for it can cause outages, project delays, and costly rework.

Bcf (billion Cubic Feet)

Industry

A standard unit measuring large volumes of natural gas, equal to one billion cubic feet. Subcontractors use Bcf figures to gauge project scale and forecast workload duration. Larger Bcf targets typically mean longer contracts and more field service opportunities.

Early-Works

Industry

Preliminary site preparation activities awarded before a project's main contract is finalised. For subcontractors, this means mobilising early—often under a letter of intent—to handle clearing, grading, or utility work. Scope and payment terms can be limited, so review your agreement carefully before committing resources.

Inactive Well

Industry

A wellbore that is not currently producing or being actively operated, but has not been formally abandoned. Subcontractors may be hired for monitoring, maintenance, or eventual reclamation work on these sites. Regulatory requirements around inactive wells vary by province and can affect scope and timeline.

Telescopic Boom Lift

Industry

A self-propelled aerial work platform with a straight, extendable arm used to position workers and equipment at height. Common on industrial construction and maintenance sites where horizontal reach is needed. Subcontractors typically rent this equipment and must factor operator certification and mobilisation costs into bids.

Wellsite Services

Industry

On-location support work performed at an active drill site, including safety watch, equipment operation, and logistics. Subcontractors are typically mobilised on short notice and paid on a day-rate basis. Scope can shift quickly, so clear change-order processes are essential.
