Alberta's Top 10 Pre-Bid Power Projects Top $70B, Led by Peace River Nuclear Plant

Daily Commercial News has published its August 2026 ranking of Albertaโ€™s top 10 pre-bid power plant projects by value, and the list is dominated by mega-scale generation and carbon capture work still in the design and planning stages. Topping the list is the Peace River Nuclear Power Project from Energy Alberta, a $40 billion facility slated to house four CANDU MONARK reactors generating up to 4,800 megawatts, currently in the design phase. Close behind is the $16.5 billion Pathways Foundational CCS Project, a 400-kilometre CO2 pipeline network in the Cold Lake region now in final planning, and the $10 billion Moraine Power Generation Project near Whitecourt, a 465-megawatt gas-fired plant with carbon capture in design. Rounding out the list are projects ranging from the $1 billion Flipi Combined Cycle Power Plant near Bluffton down to the $120 million Dolcy Solar and Battery Storage project in Edgerton.

What It Means for Subcontractors

  • Civil, E&I, and pipefitting contractors should start tracking the Peace River nuclear project and the Pathways CCS pipeline now, both are still in design or final planning, meaning subcontract packages for site work, pipeline construction, and power facility buildout have not yet been let.
  • Mechanical and electrical subs working the Whitecourt and Bluffton corridors have two live gas-fired targets, the $10 billion Moraine project and the $1 billion Flipi Combined Cycle plant, both tied to pipeline tie-ins that will need HDD and welding crews ahead of commissioning.
  • Smaller-scale players should watch the $200 million Canyon Creek Pumped Hydro project near Hinton and the $120 million Dolcy Solar and Battery Storage project in Edgerton, sized for regional civil and electrical subcontractors rather than large EPC joint ventures.
