Industry Glossary Term

Two-Mile Lateral

A horizontal wellbore section extending approximately two miles (about 3,200 metres) from the vertical portion of the well. For subcontractors, longer laterals mean extended job durations, higher material volumes, and more crew hours on site. Pricing and logistics planning must account for the increased scope compared to standard one-mile laterals.

Related Terms

Title 17 (doe Loan Programme)

Industry

A U.S. Department of Energy programme that provides federal loan guarantees for innovative energy projects. Large-scale recipients often fund construction and field work, creating subcontract opportunities. Understanding it helps field service companies identify stable, federally-backed project pipelines.

VDC (Virtual Design and Construction)

Industry

A project delivery approach that combines 3D modelling, scheduling, and cost data into a single digital environment. Subcontractors use VDC to coordinate scope, reduce field conflicts, and plan work sequences before boots hit the ground. Early involvement in VDC workflows can help subs identify clashes, price work more accurately, and avoid costly rework.

IEA (International Energy Agency)

Industry

An intergovernmental organisation that publishes global energy outlooks and demand forecasts, which subcontractors and field service companies use to anticipate shifts in upstream and downstream activity levels that may affect project pipelines and contract opportunities.

Artificial Lift

Industry

A system used to boost production from oil wells that lack sufficient natural pressure to bring fluids to surface. Common methods include rod pumps, ESPs (Electric Submersible Pumps), and gas lift. Subcontractors are often mobilised to install, service, or troubleshoot these systems throughout a well's producing life.

500-Kv Transmission Line

Industry

A high-voltage power line carrying 500 kilovolts, typically built to move bulk electricity across long distances. Subcontractors on these projects must hold specialised high-voltage certifications and follow strict safety exclusion zones. Work scopes often include tower erection, conductor stringing, and ground grid installation.

Well Spacing

Industry

The regulated distance between wellbores on a pad or lease area. Tighter spacing means more wells drilled closer together, increasing crew density and equipment demand. Subcontractors should anticipate compressed timelines and overlapping scopes when spacing is tight.
