West Virginia's $250M natural gas pipeline creates subcontractor opportunities

According to ENR, Hope Gas will begin construction in April on a $250 million natural gas pipeline project in Mason County, West Virginia. The initial 30-mile segment of 24-inch diameter pipeline targets completion by end of 2026, supporting American Intelligence & Power Corp.’s planned 8-gigawatt data center campus and other energy development projects along the Ohio River northwest of Charleston.

The privately funded project will enhance energy delivery capacity in an area capitalizing on natural gas resources. Construction coincides with Caterpillar delivering 2 gigawatts of fast-response generator sets between September 2026 and August 2027 for the data center development.

What It Means for Subcontractors

  • Pipeline construction services including trenching, welding, coating, and horizontal directional drilling will see immediate opportunities on the 30-mile initial segment
  • Heavy civil contractors can expect related infrastructure work along U.S. Route 35, plus residential and commercial development as the energy hub expands
  • Electrical and mechanical contractors should monitor the data center buildout timeline, as 8 gigawatts of generation capacity will require substantial supporting infrastructure beyond the pipeline itself
