US Rig Count Climbs to 593 as Oklahoma Adds Rig

The U.S. active rig count rose to 593 last week, and Oklahoma added a rig to reach 51, OK Energy Today reports, citing the Baker Hughes Rig Count released Friday.

Market Impact

The national count grew by five rigs, with oil rigs up one to 455 and gas rigs up four to 128. The miscellaneous category held steady at 10, while offshore rigs fell by two from 12. Oklahomaโ€™s gain to 51 rigs compares to 43 a year ago, a jump OK Energy Today attributes to renewed interest in energy production across the state.

Texas added two rigs to reach 277, and New Mexico gained three to hit 99. North Dakota held at 24, Louisiana stayed at 38, and Colorado remained at 13. The Independent Oil and Gas Servicesโ€™ Red Top Rig Report showed Kansas up two rigs to 21. Alaska held at 12, California stayed at 7, Ohio remained at 10, and Pennsylvania stayed at 16. Utah dropped one rig to 13, West Virginia held at 9, and Wyoming stayed at 15. Measured against a year ago, the national total of 593 is 54 rigs higher than the 539 count Baker Hughes reported in August 2025, driven by a 12-month gain of 43 oil rigs, six gas rigs, and five miscellaneous rigs.

What It Means for Subcontractors

  • Drilling and completions crews in Oklahoma should expect incremental work as the stateโ€™s rig count climbs toward 51, up from 43 a year ago, with the next Baker Hughes release due the following Friday to confirm whether the trend holds.
  • Texas operators added two rigs to reach 277 and New Mexico added three to hit 99, both signals for pressure pumping, wireline, and trucking outfits in the Permian Basin to expect steady near-term bid activity.
  • Kansas rig activity rose two rigs to 21 per the Red Top Rig Report, a smaller but notable uptick worth tracking for regional service companies weighing crew allocation in the Mid-Continent.
  • With gas rigs up four nationally to 128, E&I and midstream-adjacent subcontractors in gas-focused basins should watch for follow-on completions and hookup work tied to that increase.
  • Offshore rigs fell by two to 10, a signal that offshore-focused service providers may see softer near-term demand even as onshore activity firms up.
