According to Rigzone, Qatar shut down liquefied natural gas production at the world’s largest export facility after an Iranian drone attack, sending European gas prices surging more than 50%. QatarEnergy’s Ras Laffan plant covers about a fifth of global LNG supply, and the company has declared force majeure on contractual obligations to deliver LNG to customers.

The shutdown comes as tankers have largely stopped transiting the Strait of Hormuz, which carries roughly 20% of the world’s LNG. While there are no reports of facility damage, the duration of the disruption remains uncertain. Goldman Sachs estimates that if shipping through the strait were halted for a month, European gas prices could more than double.

What It Means for Subcontractors

  • Higher project activity likely: Energy companies may accelerate North American LNG projects and pipeline work to compensate for Middle East supply disruptions, potentially creating more opportunities for field service providers
  • Equipment and labor costs could rise: Global energy supply tightness typically drives up costs across the supply chain, from specialized equipment rentals to skilled labor rates
  • Gas-focused contractors should prepare for volatility: Companies working on gas processing, pipeline, and LNG infrastructure should expect pricing fluctuations and potential rush orders as operators scramble to secure alternative supplies
