Petrobras Confirms Pre-Salt Oil Discovery at Marlim Sul Field in Campos Basin

Petrobras has identified high-quality oil in the pre-salt zone of the Campos Basin offshore Brazil, opening appraisal work and potential service contracts at the Marlim Sul field.

According to Drilling Contractor, Petrobras has confirmed the presence of high-quality oil in the pre-salt section of the Campos Basin offshore Brazil, following the drilling of an exploration well at its Marlim Sul field.

Discovery Details

The well, designated 3-BRSA-1397-RJS, sits roughly 113 km offshore in 1,178 meters of water near the municipality of Campos dos Goytacazes, Rio de Janeiro. Petrobras confirmed the oil-bearing interval using wireline logs, hydrocarbon shows, and fluid sampling. Collected samples are now headed to laboratory analysis to characterize the reservoirs and fluids, with further appraisal work expected to follow.

Marlim Sul is an established deepwater field in the Campos Basin, one of Brazil’s most prolific producing regions. A pre-salt hit there signals Petrobras is actively working to extend the productive life and expand the resource base of mature assets, not just chasing frontier acreage. That strategy tends to generate sustained, multi-phase service demand rather than a single campaign.

What It Means for Subcontractors

While this discovery is offshore Brazil and outside the direct US market, it carries practical signals for field service companies, particularly those with deepwater capability or ties to Petrobras supply chains.

  • Wireline and formation evaluation contractors should note that fluid sampling and log interpretation are driving the appraisal program. Companies with deepwater wireline capacity are positioned for near-term work as characterization continues.
  • Drilling fluids, well testing, and completion services firms active in Brazil or looking to expand should watch for appraisal well tenders. Pre-salt appraisal programs in the Campos Basin typically involve multiple follow-up wells.
  • US-based service companies with Brazilian operations, including Halliburton, SLB, and Baker Hughes, are likely candidates for appraisal contracts. Smaller specialty subcontractors partnered with those majors may see downstream work.
  • The Foresea drillship ODN I recently secured a Petrobras contract offshore Brazil, reported the same day by Drilling Contractor, suggesting Petrobras is actively contracting rigs and support services in the region right now.
