According to Drilling Contractor, Petrobras has confirmed a natural gas discovery at the Copoazu-1 exploratory well in deep waters offshore Colombia, approximately 36 km from shore. The well sits within Block GUA-OFF-0, near the previously discovered Sirius-1 and Sirius-2 wells. Gas-bearing intervals were confirmed through electric logs and fluid sampling, including in a secondary target beyond the main objective. Petrobras operates through its subsidiary PIB-COL with a 44.44% working interest, alongside Ecopetrol at 55.56%.

What It Means for Subcontractors

  • Deep-water discoveries at this scale typically trigger demand for well logging, fluid sampling, and completion services as operators move from exploration toward appraisal drilling.
  • Proximity to the Sirius wells suggests a growing block-level program, which could mean sustained work for ROV operators, subsea inspection firms, and offshore drilling support contractors.
  • US-based service companies with Gulf of Mexico deep-water experience are well-positioned to pursue work in Colombia, where regulatory and technical requirements closely mirror offshore Gulf operations.
