Bechtel Hits Substantial Completion on Cheniere's Corpus Christi LNG Expansion
Bechtel has reached substantial completion on the Corpus Christi Liquefaction Stage 3 Project in Gregory, Texas, Construction Dive reports, marking another major LNG milestone for the contractor along the Gulf Coast.
The Reston, Virginia-based firm turned over care, custody and control of the seventh and final liquefaction train to owner Cheniere Energy on Aug. 28, according to a Cheniere announcement cited by Construction Dive. Bechtel began work on the project’s third stage in 2022. The completed expansion increases Cheniere’s LNG production capacity by more than 20%, to roughly 56 million tonnes per annum.

“This achievement enables us to increase our supply of much-needed secure, reliable and affordable energy to the world at a critical time, while delivering on our commitments to our customers and creating long-term value for our stakeholders,” said Jack Fusco, Cheniere’s chairman, president and CEO, in the news release.
The Corpus Christi milestone adds to a string of large Texas and Gulf Coast LNG awards for Bechtel. In May, the contractor won a $4.69 billion contract to expand Cheniere’s Sabine Pass plant in Cameron Parish, Louisiana. Separately, NextDecade contracted Bechtel for $9 billion in additional work at the Rio Grande project in June 2025, on top of $12 billion already awarded for the project’s first phase. NextDecade also reached financial close last September on Train 4, a segment worth $4.77 billion to Bechtel. Construction Dive notes the completion comes as geopolitical disruptions, including the war in Iran affecting tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, have raised the stakes for U.S. LNG supply.
