Daily oil & gas and construction news for subcontractors

IndustryGlossary Term

Intervention Vessel

A specialised ship used to perform maintenance, repair, or remediation work on subsea wells and pipelines. Subcontractors are often mobilised to these vessels for ROV operations, well work, or equipment installation. Scheduling and access are tightly controlled by the operator.

Related Terms

Ductile Iron

Industry

A strong, flexible cast iron alloy used in pipes, fittings, and valves on oil and gas and construction sites. It resists cracking under pressure, making it common in water, gas, and slurry line installations. Subcontractors should confirm material specs before procurement, as ductile iron has specific handling and joining requirements.

Catenary

Industry

The natural curve a hanging cable, chain, or pipe forms under its own weight between two anchor points. In field work, this shape is critical for pipeline spanning, rigging, and subsea riser installations. Subcontractors must account for catenary loads when planning lifts or laying flexible lines.

ABC (Associated Builders and Contractors)

Industry

A U.S. trade association representing merit-shop contractors in construction and industrial sectors. Subcontractors use ABC membership for training resources, safety programmes, and industry networking. Membership can also signal credibility when bidding on open-shop projects.

Onshore

Industry

Refers to oil and gas or construction operations located on land, as opposed to offshore or marine environments. For subcontractors, onshore work typically means different mobilisation logistics, certification requirements, and rate structures. Most Canadian field service activity in Alberta and Saskatchewan is onshore.

Highway Trust Fund

Industry

A U.S. federal fund that finances highway and infrastructure construction projects. Subcontractors bidding on federally funded road or infrastructure work must meet strict compliance and wage requirements tied to this funding. Budget cycles and congressional approvals directly affect project timelines and payment schedules.

Heavy Civil Contractors

Industry

Companies that build large-scale infrastructure such as roads, bridges, pipelines, and earthworks. For subcontractors, they are common prime contractors who hire specialised field crews and equipment operators. Understanding their project structures helps subs navigate bidding, scheduling, and payment terms.
