New Mexico DOT Launches Construction Boom With $2.5B in Federal Highway Funds
According to Engineering News-Record, New Mexico’s Department of Transportation is in the midst of a major infrastructure expansion, driven by surging oil and gas revenues and federal funding from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. NMDOT received $2.5 billion for highways and bridges through the IIJA, on top of $1.3 billion in state oil and gas revenue added since 2019. Active and upcoming projects include the $268-million I-25 Improved design-build effort running through spring 2027, a $170-million US/Mexico Border Highway Connector in Doña Ana County, and a $142-million Nogal Canyon Bridge Replacement on I-25.
What It Means for Subcontractors
- New Mexico is a live market for design-build and heavy civil work, with multiple large contracts active or entering planning phases now.
- The I-25 Improved project runs through spring 2027, meaning subcontractor opportunities in bridge replacement and interchange modernization are still in play.
- NMDOT has identified $7.5 billion in total repair needs, and a proposed Senate bill would add $1.5 billion in bonds, signaling a long bid pipeline for firms positioned in the state.
