Micron Plans $10B Boise Research Facility as Semiconductor Push Expands
Micron Technology announced Aug. 20 that it plans to break ground in 2027 on a new semiconductor research facility at its Boise, Idaho campus, expanding a site where the chipmaker is already building two leading-edge memory fabs, according to Engineering News-Record.

The facility will anchor Micron Research Labs, a $10 billion research initiative focused on memory technologies, advanced memory and computing architectures, packaging, and future semiconductor manufacturing. Micron says the Boise facility will house hundreds of researchers, with the investment funding university collaborations and satellite labs separate from the companyโs broader U.S. expansion program.
โMicron Research Labs gives that legacy a dedicated home for long-horizon innovation, the kind of research that sits upstream of every product we build,โ said Scott DeBoer, Micron executive vice president and chief technology and products officer.
The new facility will sit alongside Micronโs existing Boise research operation, which already includes about 250,000 sq ft of cleanroom space, according to federal environmental documents cited by ENR. It will also neighbor the companyโs expanding manufacturing complex: the four-story ID1 fab, with a roughly 1.2-million-sq-ft footprint and about 600,000 sq ft of cleanroom space, is expected to begin producing memory chips in mid-2027, the same year Micron plans to start construction on the Research Labs building. The ID2 fab is scheduled to follow in late 2028. Boise city records show a $220 million mechanical, electrical, and plumbing package for ID1โs probe building and a separate $149 million package for utility trestles connecting systems across the campus, work the city says is driving elevated electrical and plumbing permit activity locally.
Applied Materials President and CEO Gary Dickerson, whose company supplies chipmaking equipment to Micron, said in comments reported by ENR that increasingly complex memory and computing architectures will require advances across the supply chain. โAs memory and computing architectures become increasingly complex, advances in new materials, equipment, process technology and chip packaging will play an essential role in turning breakthrough ideas into reality,โ Dickerson said. Micron has not disclosed the Research Labs facilityโs size, construction cost, or completion schedule, and no designer or builder has yet been identified for the project.
What It Means for Subcontractors
- Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing contractors already working Micronโs Boise campus should watch for a new bid package once a builder is selected for the Research Labs facility, likely following the pattern of the $220M and $149M MEP and utility-trestle packages already awarded on ID1.
- Cleanroom fit-out and process-piping specialists have a multi-year runway: with ID1 ramping in mid-2027 and ID2 following in late 2028, the campus will run overlapping construction and commissioning phases well into the decade.
- Firms with semiconductor or advanced-manufacturing cleanroom experience are well positioned, since Micronโs stated goal of co-locating research and high-volume production is likely to require specialized gas, water, and electrical infrastructure similar to the adjacent fabs.
- Local Boise-area trades should expect continued elevated permit activity tied to Micronโs expansion, per the cityโs own tracking of electrical and plumbing permits on the campus.
- Contractors on other Micron sites, including its Clay, New York project, should treat the Research Labs announcement as a signal of Micronโs continued multi-billion-dollar capital commitment to memory manufacturing capacity across its U.S. footprint.
