Bechtel Tapped as EPC Partner for Micron's $100B New York Semiconductor Megafab

According to Construction Dive, Micron has selected Bechtel as the engineering, procurement, and construction partner for the first phase of its $100 billion semiconductor manufacturing complex in Clay, New York, with the Reston, Virginia-based contractor set to mobilize immediately at the White Pine Commerce Park site in Onondaga County.

Market Impact

The project, which Micron broke ground on in January 2026, is slated to become the largest semiconductor manufacturing facility in the United States. The Bechtel award marks the transition from site preparation into active construction, following Providence, Rhode Island-based Gilbane’s preconstruction contract awarded in August 2025.

Micron pushed back the opening of its first facility on the campus by two years, to 2030, with additional fab milestones running through 2041. That revised timeline means sustained construction demand in upstate New York stretching across more than a decade. Bechtel said it plans to deploy modular construction strategies and digital-enabled technologies under an integrated EPC delivery model designed to streamline workforce coordination and keep the project on schedule.

“We are entering an exciting new phase of construction,” said Manish Bhatia, executive vice president of global operations at Micron, in a company release. “Our New York project will be home to the most advanced memory manufacturing in the world.”

What It Means for Subcontractors

  • Bechtel’s immediate mobilization signals that trade subcontractors in electrical, mechanical, and civil disciplines should begin positioning now for bid opportunities at the Clay, New York, site.
  • With fab milestones extending through 2041, this is a multi-decade pipeline of work, not a single award cycle. Subcontractors who establish relationships early with Bechtel’s procurement teams will have a long runway.
  • Bechtel’s stated use of modular construction strategies may favor subcontractors with prefabrication capabilities and experience with digital construction tools and BIM coordination.
  • The Onondaga County location means subcontractors based in or willing to mobilize to upstate New York should monitor Bechtel’s subcontractor outreach closely as the EPC phase ramps up.
  • Gilbane’s earlier preconstruction role shows the project is using multiple GC and contractor relationships at different phases, so opportunities are not limited to Bechtel’s direct supply chain.
