Liebherr R 9100 G8 Excavator Moves to Series Production with 20% Fuel Savings

Liebherr's new 100-ton R 9100 G8 mining excavator enters series production in mid-2026, delivering 20% better fuel efficiency and 92% availability in field trials.

According to International Mining, Liebherr has cleared its R 9100 G8 excavator for purchase after field validation showed strong results, with backhoe units entering series production in Q2 2026 and face shovel configuration following in Q3. A pre-series unit operating at a mine in South Sumatra averaged 411 hours per month and 92% availability between September 2024 and December 2025. The machine burns 20% less fuel than its predecessor, translating to up to 100,000 liters saved per year.

What It Means for Subcontractors

  • Fuel runs up to 40% of operating costs on a 100-ton excavator, so the G8’s efficiency gains directly affect job-site margins for equipment operators and earthmoving contractors
  • Higher availability (92% in trials) means less unplanned downtime, which matters when subcontractors face liquidated damages or tight production schedules on mining or heavy civil projects
  • Contractors sourcing new iron for Permian Basin, Gulf Coast, or oil sands earthmoving work should ask OEM reps about G8 pricing and delivery windows now. Backhoe series production begins Q2 2026, meaning order books could fill quickly.
