According to Pit & Quarry, Volvo Construction Equipment detailed a $40 million investment to bring excavator and wheel loader production to Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, during a ConExpo-Con/Agg press conference. The company also unveiled its new EC560 excavator, a 56-ton machine designed to bridge the gap between existing size classes in Volvo’s lineup.

Scott Young, Volvo CE’s president for North America, highlighted the EC560’s applications in quarry operations, particularly for heavy breaking work and infrastructure projects. The machine features electro-over-hydraulic controls and integrated tool management through its display system.

What It Means for Subcontractors

  • Local production benefits: The Pennsylvania manufacturing investment could mean shorter delivery times and potentially better parts availability for US-based contractors
  • Equipment sizing option: The 56-ton EC560 fills a gap between smaller and larger excavators, offering quarry and heavy construction subs a mid-range option for breaking and infrastructure work
  • Technology integration: Enhanced display systems and tool integration could reduce operator training time and improve productivity on jobsites
