Hugh Brinson Pipeline Starts Early Permian Gas Flows Ahead of 2027 Target

Energy Transferโ€™s Hugh Brinson pipeline is already moving natural gas out of the Permian Basin, months before its scheduled completion date, East Daley Analytics reported, as covered by Permian Basin Oil & Gas Magazine. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission filings show intrastate flows began June 13, the same day the pipelineโ€™s Section 311 tariff and statement of operating conditions took effect. The system isnโ€™t slated for full operation until March 1, 2027, but East Daley says the early filing suggests Energy Transfer is bringing Hugh Brinson online in phases, offering incremental Permian takeaway capacity before all mainline, compression, lateral and interconnect facilities are finished. The filing did not disclose current volumes.

The full system will run 400 miles of 42-inch pipeline from the Waha hub in west Texas to Maypearl, south of Dallas-Fort Worth, plus a 42-mile, 36-inch lateral tying the mainline to processing facilities in Martin and Midland counties. The project is designed to move Permian gas east toward East Texas, the Katy hub and Gulf Coast demand markets, and it already has transportation agreements with seven large customers, including Matador Resources.

What It Means for Subcontractors

  • Crews still finishing tie-ins, compression stations and lateral connections in Martin and Midland counties should expect accelerated schedules as Energy Transfer brings segments online in phases rather than waiting for the March 1, 2027 full in-service date.
  • Pipefitting, welding and E&I contractors working the Waha-to-Maypearl corridor can anticipate earlier commissioning and testing windows on completed segments, even as construction continues on remaining mainline and interconnect work.
  • Gathering and midstream contractors serving Permian producers should note that added takeaway capacity, even partial, could ease bottlenecks sooner than expected, a signal worth flagging to producer clients weighing new drilling or completion activity tied to available egress.
