EDP Renewables Completes 200-MW Battery Storage Project in Coolidge, Arizona
According to Solar Power World, EDP Renewables North America and Salt River Project (SRP) have completed the Flatland Energy Storage project, a 200-MW/800-MWh standalone battery energy storage system located in Coolidge, Arizona. The project generated 142 construction jobs and is expected to deliver more than $20 million in local and regional economic impact over its lifetime, with much of that funding directed toward public services including schools, roads, and emergency services.
What It Means for Subcontractors
- Large-scale standalone BESS projects are moving from planning to execution in the Southwest, meaning electrical, civil, and commissioning subcontractors in Arizona and neighboring states should be positioning for this work now.
- At 142 construction jobs for a single 200-MW project, the labor demand on future builds of this scale is significant, particularly for crews experienced in utility-scale battery installation and grid interconnection.
- SRP has signaled continued investment in battery storage resources, and EDPR NA already operates roughly 600 MW of solar and storage capacity across Arizona, suggesting a sustained pipeline of project work in the region.
