Title: DOE Orders California Oil Platform Restart After Persian Gulf Disruptions

According to Rigzone, Energy Secretary Chris Wright has ordered Sable Offshore Corp to restart the Santa Ynez Unit oil production facility off California’s coast, invoking emergency powers amid Persian Gulf shipping disruptions. The facility can produce 50,000 barrels per day and has been offline since a 2015 oil spill that released 123,000 gallons and damaged 150 miles of coastline.

The restart bypasses California state regulators who had blocked operations, with DOE citing national security concerns as more than 60% of California’s refined oil comes from overseas.

What It Means for Subcontractors

  • Pipeline maintenance and inspection work likely as Sable completed onshore pipeline repairs in 2025 but the full facility restart will require ongoing compliance monitoring
  • Potential opportunities in platform servicing, as bringing the full facility back online will require additional support services beyond the single platform currently producing
  • California Attorney General’s lawsuit against federal permits creates regulatory uncertainty that could delay or complicate project timelines for contractors
