Bird Construction Racks Up $1B in New Awards Across Nuclear, Marine, Mining and Schools

Bird Construction Inc. has disclosed roughly $1 billion in new project awards and agreements spanning nuclear, marine, civil, mining, industrial and buildings work across Canada, Daily Commercial News reports.

Market Impact

The Mississauga-based contractorโ€™s breakdown touches multiple provinces and sectors. Bird was named preferred negotiating proponent for a multi-year nuclear sector contract, though the project owner and scope remain undisclosed. In British Columbia, Birdโ€™s specialized self-perform marine unit FRPD landed major marine and dredging work. Birdโ€™s Industrial Maintenance division picked up a new three-year furnace maintenance contract and renewed a three-year electrical, instrumentation, insulation and mechanical services agreement with existing industrial clients.

In northern Quebec, Bird Heavy Civil will support an Indigenous-led partnership on site earthworks and underground services for a major mine development. In Alberta, Bird Industrial will deliver a new liquefied petroleum gas rail loading facility for a Canadian energy infrastructure client, covering civil earthworks, underground utilities, piling, module fabrication and installation, piping, and mechanical and electrical systems. Bird Buildings also won a contract for a food production facility for a new client in Eastern Canada. Separately, Concert-Bird Partners, a consortium including Bird Capital Limited Partnership, Bird Design-Build Construction Inc., Wright Construction Western Inc., Concert Infrastructure Ltd., Ainsworth Inc. and BR2 Architecture Inc., reached financial close on a design-build-finance-maintain contract for seven new schools totaling approximately 524,000 square feet in Calgary, Chestermere and Edmonton.

What It Means for Subcontractors

  • Alberta LPG rail facility: Bird Industrialโ€™s scope includes civil earthworks, underground utilities, piling, module fabrication and installation, piping, and mechanical/electrical systems, meaning bid packages for pipefitting, E&I, civil and piling crews should open as Bird mobilizes.
  • Alberta schools P3: The Concert-Bird Partners consortium has reached financial close on 524,000 square feet of school space across Calgary, Chestermere and Edmonton, a signal that mechanical, electrical and general trades subcontract packages tied to Ainsworth Inc.โ€™s involvement will likely follow in the near term.
  • Northern Quebec mine development: Bird Heavy Civilโ€™s earthworks and underground services package for the Indigenous-led mine partnership points to upcoming civil and underground utility subcontracts in that region.
  • B.C. marine and dredging: FRPDโ€™s award opens the door for marine trades, dredging support and specialized self-perform subcontractors in British Columbia to line up work under Birdโ€™s self-perform business.
  • Industrial maintenance renewals: The new three-year furnace maintenance contract and renewed electrical, instrumentation, insulation and mechanical services agreement suggest ongoing turnaround and maintenance subcontract opportunities with Birdโ€™s long-standing industrial clients.
