Arizona's Project Sterling Starts Building 509-MW Solar, 1.4-GWh BESS

ContourGlobal has started building Project Sterling, a 509-MW solar and 1.4-GWh battery storage project in Mohave County, Arizona, Solar Power World reported Oct. 8. Tesla has already signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) for the project.

Project Details

The project sits just off a historic stretch of Route 66 between Topock and Kingman. According to Solar Power World, the build will install more than 760,000 solar modules and over 300 battery storage containers.

Local construction teams will handle civil works, road construction and site logistics. To reach the site, the company is building Polaris Road, a 5.2-mile route that connects Route 66 to the solar and storage footprint.

Antonio Cammisecra, quoted in the report, said the team engineered the project around its customerโ€™s needs so it can deliver clean power for up to 16 hours a day. He described the design as using sunlight to generate electricity and storing part of that energy for delivery after sunset.

The source does not name an EPC contractor, list subcontract packages, give a schedule or state a project cost. It also does not say which trades beyond civil, roads and logistics have been awarded.

What It Means for Subcontractors

  • Civil, roads and logistics: The report says local construction teams are carrying out this work, so these scopes appear to be staffed. Firms in Mohave County or nearby that want in should ask ContourGlobal whether any overflow, haulage or site-logistics support remains open.
  • Electrical and BESS install: The source is silent on who is installing modules, wiring and battery containers. With 760,000-plus modules and 300-plus containers, the install scope is large. That is an inference from the quantities, not a sourced staffing figure. Ask ContourGlobal directly which electrical and storage-install packages are still open and who the buyer is.
  • Polaris Road and site access: The 5.2-mile road from Route 66 is the entry point for deliveries. Earthwork, aggregate, paving and traffic-control firms should ask whether that road work is fully awarded. They should also ask how it will tie into the main site.
  • Storage sequencing: The report does not say whether battery containers arrive before, with or after the solar fields. Get that answer before committing crews. It affects when container-setting, electrical tie-in and commissioning labor is needed.
  • Offtake certainty: Teslaโ€™s signed PPA means the project has a committed buyer. Subcontractors weighing payment terms and crew commitments can factor that in, though the source gives no financing details.

Solar Power Worldโ€™s article is the only source for these details, and it does not include contacts, bid dates or package values. Reach out to ContourGlobal for those.
