Permian M&A wave: Continental buys FireBird

Plus: Permian power crunch is boom time for electrical subs, Alberta hits $70B

🔥 The Big One

Continental Buys FireBird, Deepens Permian Bet

Continental Resources is acquiring FireBird Energy II for roughly 32,000 boed and 54,000 net acres in the Midland Basin, sitting right next to its existing operations. The deal hands Continental 307 gross operated development locations across six-plus stacked pay zones, and it's the latest in a run that's grown the company's Permian acreage by more than 40% over the past 14 months. For crews, that's a deeper backlog of drilling and completions work stacking up in Continental's Midland footprint for years to come. If you're not already qualified with Continental, this is the moment to get in the door before the vendor list locks in.

✍️ Editor's Take

Continental buying FireBird, Targa sanctioning three gas plants, and WhiteWater taking FID on Solitude all landed the same week, and that's no coincidence: it's a basin consolidating while building out infrastructure. Add Diamondback's warning that Permian power demand doubles in a decade, and drilling, completions, midstream and electrical crews are all staring at multi-year backlogs in the same square miles. The catch is NGI's processing wall: egress solves by 2028 but gas treating lags, so contractors locking in Permian work now hold leverage they'll lose once that bottleneck bites. Alberta's $70B pre-bid power list is the same story one province over: get qualified before design turns into awarded contracts.

📍 Where the Work Is

  • Permian Basin, TX/NM 🔥 HOT — Continental's FireBird buy, Targa's three new gas plants, WhiteWater's Solitude pipeline FID and Select Water's $120M New Mexico buildout are all stacking up simultaneously.
  • Alberta, Canada 🔥 HOT — A $70B pre-bid power project list led by a $40B nuclear plant, plus a company-record HDD bore under the Athabasca River, points to years of design and construction work.
  • Gulf Coast (LA/TX) — Nearly 8 Bcf/d of new LNG export capacity is coming online between 2027 and mid-2028 along the Gillis-to-Katy corridor.
  • Piketon, Ohio — NVIDIA's up-to-$105B AI data center campus already has Bechtel and Kiewit on board for a 10-GW build.
  • Arizona — The nearly $1B I-10 Wild Horse Pass widening and McCarthy's new 12-acre Tempe training campus are both underway.

👷 Crew Market: Amazon's third Shreveport, LA data center campus is expected to support up to 2,250 construction jobs as its regional investment climbs to $18B.

📈 The Number

$70B

Alberta's pre-bid power project pipeline just cleared $70 billion, led by a $40B nuclear plant and a $16.5B CCS pipeline network. That's years of civil, E&I and pipefitting work still in design phase for contractors positioning early.
