Utility Locating Terms Trenchless Subs Need to Know Before Breaking Ground
According to Trenchless Technology, utility locating terminology is not optional knowledge for trenchless contractors. In a piece by Mike Iadanza published in the Spring 2026 issue of Small Diameter Trenchless, the publication outlines key terms that professionals should understand before any digging or rehabilitation work begins. Among the most important: the difference between public and private utilities. Public utilities are covered by the 811 call-before-you-dig system, while private utilities on commercial, multi-family, or industrial sites are not, and that’s often where the real exposure is.
What It Means for Subcontractors
- Calling 811 is not enough on commercial or industrial jobs. Private utilities beyond the meter are your responsibility to locate, and a strike there is on you.
- Trenchless work, including lining, vacuum excavation, and HDD, carries higher subsurface risk because there’s no open trench giving you visual confirmation of what’s below.
- Getting fluent in locating terminology helps you ask sharper questions at pre-construction meetings and push back when site utility information looks incomplete.
