JAPEX Spuds Deepwater Exploration Well Offshore Japan in Hunt for Natural Gas

Japanese oil and gas company JAPEX has begun drilling an offshore exploration well in the Hidaka area off Hokkaido, targeting natural gas resources in roughly 1,070 meters of water.

FieldNews Staff |

According to Drilling Contractor, Japan Petroleum Exploration Co. (JAPEX) spudded an exploratory well on March 24 in the Hidaka area offshore Hokkaido, located approximately 50 km from shore in about 1,070 meters of water. The program aims to confirm natural gas presence and evaluate reservoir characteristics, with production testing planned if hydrocarbons are encountered. Operations are expected to run through late May 2026.

What It Means for Subcontractors

  • Deepwater campaigns at this water depth require specialized drilling, logging, and well testing services, creating near-term contract opportunities for service companies with offshore deepwater capabilities.
  • If production testing proceeds, well testing and intervention specialists will be in demand for the May timeframe.
  • While this is a Japanese domestic play, the program signals continued upstream exploration spending in Asia-Pacific, a market worth monitoring for US-based service firms expanding internationally.
