Drilling Mud Direct Lands Broadwater Capital Partnership to Grow HDD Supply Network

According to Trenchless Technology, Colorado-based Drilling Mud Direct (DMD) has secured a financing partnership with Broadwater Capital to expand its nationwide distribution network for drilling fluids, bentonite, shaker screens, and related consumables used in horizontal directional drilling (HDD) and civil construction.

HDD Supply Distributor Secures Growth Capital

Founded in 2002 by Clint Pitman, DMD operates a stockpoint network across the US and distributes consumable products essential to trenchless and HDD operations. Its affiliated companies, Freight Direct LLC and Pitbull Services LLC, handle logistics and onsite mud engineering respectively, giving DMD an integrated supply-to-wellsite service model.

The financing from Broadwater Capital is intended to fund additional stockpoints, technology upgrades, and expanded market reach. Erik Barner, founder and managing partner of Broadwater Capital, pointed to market conditions as a key driver. “The HDD and civil construction markets are growing, and DMD is positioned at the center of that activity,” Barner said. Pitman added that existing customers should expect business as usual, but with more supply locations and support behind them.

Private capital flowing into a niche consumables distributor is a meaningful signal. It suggests investors see sustained or growing demand for HDD work, driven largely by utility, pipeline, and communications infrastructure buildout across the US.

What It Means for Subcontractors

  • More supply access, fewer delays. Additional stockpoints mean HDD contractors in more regions may see shorter lead times on bentonite, drilling fluid additives, and shaker screens, consumables that can stall a job when supply runs short.
  • Integrated services are becoming the baseline. DMD’s combination of product distribution, logistics, and onsite mud engineering reflects what contractors increasingly expect from supply partners. Subs should evaluate whether their current suppliers offer comparable support.
  • Investor interest confirms a busy pipeline. Capital backing for HDD-focused supply businesses signals that financing sources expect project volume to remain strong, good news for subcontractors bidding on trenchless, utility, and civil construction work through the remainder of 2026 and beyond.
  • Watch for pricing stability. Expanded distribution capacity can reduce regional supply bottlenecks that drive up spot pricing on consumables. Contractors who lock in supply agreements now may be better positioned than those buying at spot during peak project season.
