Matador drops $1.28B on Permian acreage
Plus: Alberta's $2.9B pipeline breaks ground and rig count keeps slipping
🔥 The Big One
Matador Bets $1.28B on Delaware Basin Land Grab
Matador Resources is paying $1.275 billion to buy Paloma Permian, picking up 16,235 net acres and more than 156 drilling locations across Eddy and Lea counties, New Mexico, with the deal closing in Q4 2026. It comes right after Matador's first Woodford test well in Lea County posted 2,200 boe/d, and a separate acquisition pushes the company's Woodford footprint to 50,000 contiguous net acres. That's pad sites, pipeline tie-ins, and completions work stacking up across the Delaware Basin for the next year or more. Matador is targeting 30-40% well cost cuts over the next 12-18 months, so crews who can mobilize fast and work efficient will have the edge landing this work.

Rig count dipped to 587 even with oil near $100, but don't read that as a slowdown. Matador, Ensign and Magnolia just committed more than $5 billion combined to Permian and Eagle Ford acreage, and Halliburton's stimulation business posted $5.7 billion in quarterly revenue on a North American rebound. New pipeline capacity finally pushed Waha gas prices positive, clearing one of the biggest bottlenecks holding back Permian completions. Add Alberta's $2.9 billion Yellowhead pipeline starting construction immediately, and the picture is clear: fewer rigs but bigger checks being written means work is consolidating into fewer, better-funded operators who need efficient crews fast, not more of them slow.
