Ensign Energy to Acquire Permian Driller Citadel for $65 Million

Calgary-based Ensign Energy Services has agreed to acquire Citadel Drilling Ltd. for US$65 million in cash, funded through existing cash and credit facilities, BOE Report reports. The deal, still subject to closing conditions, adds six high-spec AC drilling rigs to Ensignโ€™s Permian Basin fleet along with Citadelโ€™s management team, technical crews, and managed pressure drilling operations run under the Opla Energy Services name.

Ensign President and COO Robert Geddes said the acquisition increases the companyโ€™s Permian capacity by 20% and expands its market share in the region, while also delivering cost synergies. Citadelโ€™s rigs feature automated drilling control systems and are built to handle ultralong reach lateral wells, equipment Geddes said closely matches Ensignโ€™s existing fleet. TPH&Co, the energy arm of Perella Weinberg Partners, advised Citadel on the transaction.

What It Means for Subcontractors

  • Permian-area crews and service providers working with Citadel should expect integration into Ensignโ€™s broader operational platform, which may mean new procurement contacts and revised vendor qualification processes as the fleets merge.
  • Companies supplying rental equipment, well servicing, or pressure control support in the Permian should reassess their positioning, since Ensignโ€™s expanded six-rig, 20% capacity increase could shift subcontracting volume toward firms already vetted by Ensignโ€™s existing supply chain.
  • The deal signals continued consolidation among land drilling contractors in the Permian, a trend that smaller independent drillers and service firms should factor into pricing and long-term contract negotiations as larger players gain scale.
