Work Begins on $141M Weld Energy Center Battery Storage Project in Colorado
Local officials joined leaders from NextEra Energy Resources and Platte River Power Authority in June to break ground on the $141 million Weld Energy Center, Platte River’s first large-scale battery energy storage project, Construction Equipment Guide reports.
The 100 MW facility in Weld County will be owned and operated by Weld Energy Center LLC, a NextEra Energy Resources subsidiary. It sits near an existing solar site served by Platte River and will connect to the utility’s newest substation, storing excess energy for delivery during peak demand. The project is expected to create more than 200 construction jobs and generate over $6.8 million in tax revenue over 20 years, with 95 percent of land-lease revenue directed to Colorado’s public schools.
“This project represents the kind of forward-thinking approach that has historically defined Platte River,” said Platte River General Manager and CEO Jason Frisbie, noting the buildout supports grid reliability ahead of the utility’s coal unit retirement in 2029. NextEra Energy Resources Vice President Dexter Liu called the project part of “the next generation of energy infrastructure in Colorado.”
