Velan Inc. to Build Durham Region Plant for SMR Valve Components
According to the Daily Commercial News, the Ontario government has announced that Velan Inc. plans to build a new manufacturing facility in Durham Region to meet growing global demand for small modular reactor (SMR) technologies. The plant is part of a partnership with GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy to supply Reactor Integral Isolation Valves and Containment Isolation Valves, which are critical safety components for BWRX-300 SMR projects advancing across Europe. The Darlington New Nuclear Project alone is projected to contribute an estimated $38.5 billion to Canada’s GDP over 65 years, with 80% of project spending flowing to Ontario-based companies.
What It Means for Subcontractors
- Durham Region is becoming a hub for nuclear supply chain work, creating potential site preparation, construction, and specialty trade opportunities tied to Velan’s new facility.
- The BWRX-300 program’s scale across multiple European countries signals sustained, long-term demand for Canadian-manufactured components, which could drive further facility expansions and associated subcontracting work in Ontario.
- With 80% of Darlington project spending targeted at Ontario companies, local and regional field service firms should be tracking procurement and RFP activity in Durham Region closely.
