US Rig Count Rises to 553 While Oklahoma Drops One Rig

According to Oklahoma Energy Today, the US oil and gas rig count increased by 2 rigs to reach 553 total in the latest Baker Hughes weekly report. Oil rigs gained one to 412 total, while gas rigs also increased by one to 133. However, Oklahoma’s rig count dropped by one to 44 rigs, down from 51 a year ago. Texas fell by 2 rigs to 234, while New Mexico added one to reach 101 rigs.

What It Means for Subcontractors

  • Mixed signals for work volume: Overall US gains suggest steady demand, but regional variations like Oklahoma’s decline mean uneven opportunities across markets
  • Gas sector momentum: The increase in gas rigs signals potential growth in completion, flowback, and midstream services as operators respond to stronger gas fundamentals
  • Year-over-year reality check: Despite weekly gains, the national count remains 39 rigs below last year’s levels, indicating a still-cautious drilling environment
