Six API SCIMI Standards Published in 2025, Including Updates to Core Inspection Codes

According to Inspectioneering Journal, API’s Subcommittee on Inspection and Mechanical Integrity (SCIMI) published six updated standards in 2025 following its Fall Standards Conference, held in Anaheim, California in November. The updates span core inspection codes including API 570, API RP 574, API RP 580, API RP 581 (4th Edition), API 575, and API 592 (1st Edition), covering piping inspection, risk-based inspection, and storage tanks.

What It Means for Subcontractors

  • Contractors performing mechanical integrity or inspection work on refineries and pipelines should verify their procedures and documentation align with the latest editions of these standards, as clients and operators will update their compliance requirements accordingly.
  • The release of API RP 581’s 4th Edition and API 592’s 1st Edition may require updates to RBI program deliverables and inspection scope documentation on active contracts.
  • Prime contractors and operators often flow down API standards compliance to subcontractors through MSAs and work orders, so staying current reduces the risk of scope disputes or rejected deliverables.
