Nordic-Baltic Hydrogen Pipeline Locks In 87% of Booked Capacity

A proposed 2,500-kilometer hydrogen network spanning Northern and Eastern Europe has locked in non-binding commitments for 87% of its projected 2040 transport capacity, according to a Gasworld report via Pipeline Technology Journal. The consortium behind the Nordic-Baltic Hydrogen Corridor (NBHC) said a recent call for proposals drew 93 responses covering 108 individual projects, with market demand projected to hit 79.2 terawatt-hours annually by 2040. The pipeline is designed to carry up to 2.7 million tonnes of green hydrogen a year, moving surplus supply from Finland and the Baltic States south to Germany and Poland, the two largest projected demand centers.

The project is led by six transmission system operators: Gasgrid Finland, Elering, Conexus Baltic Grid, Amber Grid, Gaz-System, and Ontras. It holds EU Project of Common Interest status and has received โ‚ฌ6.8 million ($7.9 million) in early-stage EU funding. The feasibility phase, started in 2025, is set to wrap next year, with commercial operation targeted for 2033.
