New Zealand oil well restart creates opportunities for completion contractors

According to Drilling Contractor, Monumental Energy and its partners have begun initial production from the Ngaere-1 well after perforating a previously untested interval in New Zealand’s Mount Messenger Formation, with the well now producing approximately 120 barrels per day following workover operations.

Project Details

The Ngaere-1 workover produced about 3,000 barrels of oil during initial testing before being temporarily shut in to allow additional tanker capacity. The well was originally drilled more than 30 years ago, but the upper producing interval had not previously been evaluated through perforation work.

Following the successful results, the partnership plans similar perforation work at the Waihapa H1 and Ngaere-2 wells targeting the same Mount Messenger Formation. Additional stimulation and optimization activities are planned for Ngaere-1 at a later stage.

What It Means for Subcontractors

  • Completion contractors with perforation capabilities should monitor Monumental Energy’s expansion plans as two additional wells (Waihapa H1 and Ngaere-2) are planned for similar work
  • Stimulation service providers may find opportunities in the planned optimization activities for Ngaere-1, which could include hydraulic fracturing or acidizing work
  • Workover specialists experienced with older wellbores could benefit from the trend of re-evaluating previously untested zones in mature fields
  • Logistics and trucking contractors may see increased activity moving oil from remote onshore Taranaki locations, especially given the temporary shut-in for tanker capacity issues
  • Equipment rental companies providing downhole tools and surface equipment for completion work could see demand from this type of brownfield development activity

The project demonstrates how operators are finding value in older wells through modern completion techniques, creating a potential market niche for specialized contractors.
