Nebraska hasnโt broken ground on a new power plant in two decades, and the scale of the project now underway signals a wave of subcontracting work that field service companies should be tracking closely. ENR Midwest reports that Nebraska Public Power District has broken ground on the $3.1 billion Princeton Road Station expansion near Hallam, in southern Lancaster County, with Burns & McDonnell serving as engineer-procure-construct contractor.

The 684-MW natural gas facility will run on dual-fuel generation, combining two Siemens F-class combustion turbines with 12 Wรคrtsilรค reciprocating engines, according to ENR Midwest. The plant will also have the capability to run on diesel fuel, giving the utility flexibility beyond a single fuel source. Jim Pillen said at a July 21 signing event that 11.5% of the stateโs electricity already goes to data centers, ranking Nebraska second nationally for that kind of usage.
