NATA Issues 48 Heat-Safety Benchmarks for Workplace Use
The National Athletic Trainersโ Association has released 48 evidence-based recommendations for preventing heat illness on the job, Safety+Health Magazine reports.

A 28-member task force, including 10 certified athletic trainers and five occupational and environmental health and safety professionals, built the recommendations around five focus areas: accessibility of educational materials, heatโs impact on productivity, and the athletic trainerโs role in prevention, identification and treatment, and return-to-work support. Specific guidance covers environmental monitoring through heat forecasting and wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT) tracking, hydration and cooling access, emergency action planning, rapid recognition and treatment of exertional heatstroke, and safe return-to-work procedures for employees out more than 14 days.
โThe recommendations acknowledge that heat stress mitigation is not solely a medical issue, but also a workforce sustainability and productivity issue,โ said Christianne Eason, NATA task force chair and assistant professor in kinesiology at the University of Connecticut, in a press release cited by Safety+Health Magazine. โWe have provided practical strategies that employers can implement now with the support of athletic trainers, uniquely qualified to lead and support these initiatives, to reduce risk and help improve worker health.โ The full recommendations were published in NATAโs Journal of Athletic Training.
