Invictus Energy Awards Wellpad, Rig Contracts for Zimbabwe Exploration Well

Drilling Contractor reports that Invictus Energy has awarded contracts for wellpad construction and civil works ahead of drilling its Musuma-1 exploration well at the Cabora Bassa project in Zimbabwe. The scope includes access road upgrades and water supply infrastructure needed to support rig transport and drilling operations, timed so the site is ready to receive Rig 202. Exalo Drilling, the rig contractor, is mobilizing a team to Zimbabwe to begin in-country setup and critical maintenance ahead of the rig’s move to the wellpad. Invictus has also wrapped up evaluation of long-lead equipment suppliers, locking in remaining procurement items including wellheads and tubulars, while well services tenders are in advanced evaluation with an award expected in the coming weeks, followed by logistics and mobilization contracts. Musuma-1 targets an estimated gross mean unrisked resource of 1.2 Tcf of gas and 73 million barrels of condensate, marking the company’s first high-impact exploration well outside its Mukuyu discovery area. Invictus remains on track to spud the well in the second half of 2026.

What It Means for Subcontractors

  • Civil works and access road contractors have a near-term entry point now, as site prep and water supply infrastructure must be completed before Rig 202 arrives, meaning bids and mobilization crews should be lined up ahead of the H2 2026 spud date.
  • Well services firms should track the tender evaluation closely since Invictus expects to award that contract within weeks, followed quickly by logistics and mobilization packages, a fast-moving sequence that rewards companies ready to move on short notice.
  • Rig support and maintenance crews tied to Exalo Drilling’s Rig 202 mobilization should prepare for in-country setup work in Zimbabwe, a signal that trades like mechanical, E&I, and transport/logistics providers with African operations experience are positioned to benefit first.
