ERCOT Peak Load Hits Record 91.1 GW as Texas Heat Strains Grid
Hourly peak load on the Electric Reliability Council of Texas grid hit a record 91.1 gigawatts on July 22, 2026, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administrationโs Today in Energy report. The peak, recorded at 6:00 p.m. CT during a heat wave, topped the previous record of 85.5 GW set in August 2023 by 6%. Natural gas supplied 48% of generation during the peak, with solar contributing 32%, per EIA data. The agency notes the record could be broken again this summer if another heat wave hits Texas, and points to a similar trend elsewhere: the Southwest Power Pool set its own demand record of 57.9 GW on July 27.
