EON Resources Wins BLM and New Mexico Approval to Launch 92-Well Permian Horizontal Program

According to Drilling Contractor, EON Resources has received regulatory approval from the Bureau of Land Management and the State of New Mexico to begin drilling the first three horizontal wells in the San Andres formation at its Grayburg-Jackson Field in Eddy County, New Mexico, with spud anticipated in July 2026.

Market Impact

The approvals launch Phase 1 of a 92-well horizontal program operated by Virtus Energy Partners, in which EON holds a 35% working interest. EON plans to drill 10 horizontal wells in the San Andres formation by year-end 2026, with results expected to be released in Q1 2027. The company has also initiated permitting for 10 wells every six months as part of a five- to ten-year development program, signaling sustained, rolling demand for drilling and completion services across the region.

EON is not coming in cold. The company completed three vertical well recompletions in the San Andres ahead of the horizontal campaign to test completion methods, suggesting some operational baseline is already established. The company currently produces approximately 950 boe/d from the Seven Rivers formation at Grayburg-Jackson and 100 boe/d from waterflood operations at the South Justis Field in Lea County.

What It Means for Subcontractors

  • Drilling contractors: Three wells spudding in July 2026 is an immediate procurement signal. With 10 wells targeted by year-end, rig availability and crew scheduling in Eddy County should be on your radar now.
  • Completion and stimulation subs: EON used vertical recompletions to test completion methods ahead of the horizontal campaign. Contractors with San Andres experience in the Permian may have a leg up when the program scales.
  • Surface facility and pipeline subs: A five- to ten-year, 92-well development program run on a rolling six-month permitting cycle means steady infrastructure buildout. This is a long-duration opportunity, not a one-off pad.
  • Plan for pace, not just volume: The permitting cadence of 10 wells every six months is already underway. Subs that position early and build a relationship with operator Virtus Energy Partners are better placed to capture recurring work across the full program.
