Eni Discovers 1+ Trillion Cubic Feet of Gas Offshore Libya

Italian energy company Eni made two new gas discoveries in shallow water off Libya's coast, creating potential opportunities for offshore drilling and subsea contractors.

FieldNews Staff |

According to Drilling Contractor, Eni made two new gas discoveries offshore Libya at the Bahr Essalam South 2 and 3 structures, located about 85 kilometers off the coast in 650 feet of water. The discoveries contain more than 1 trillion cubic feet of gas in place within the Metlaoui Formation reservoir.

The wells, drilled 16 kilometers south of the existing Bahr Essalam gas field, encountered high-quality gas-bearing intervals. Well testing on the first discovery has already confirmed productive capacity, and the proximity to existing facilities will enable rapid development through tie-back connections.

What It Means for Subcontractors

  • Subsea contractors could benefit from tie-back pipeline installation and subsea equipment work connecting the new discoveries to existing Bahr Essalam facilities
  • Drilling contractors may see additional work as Eni develops these shallow-water discoveries, with water depths of 650 feet suitable for jackup rigs
  • Completion services companies should expect opportunities for well completion and production optimization work as the project advances from exploration to development
