Energy Transfer Expanding Nederland NGL Export Terminal to More Than 1.25 Million Bpd
According to Rigzone, Energy Transfer LP announced plans Thursday to expand its Nederland NGL Export Terminal on the Sabine-Neches Waterway between Beaumont and Port Arthur, Texas, adding 240,000 bpd of ethane export capacity and 55,000 bpd of additional LPG capacity.
Market Impact
The expansion is among the most significant midstream capital projects currently underway on the Gulf Coast. Energy Transfer said 100% of the new ethane export capacity has already been committed under long-term agreements running into the 2040s, a strong signal that construction will move forward on schedule.
The project scope extends beyond the terminal itself. Energy Transfer will expand its Mont Belvieu to Nederland NGL export pipeline, and construct two additional NGL ship docks at the facility, with dock completion expected by mid-2029. Once those docks are online, total refrigerated NGL export capacity at Nederland will exceed 1.25 million bpd. Combined with a separate expansion at the Marcus Hook NGL Export Facility in Pennsylvania, Energy Transfer’s total NGL refrigerated export capacity will reach approximately 1.7 million bpd.
The Nederland terminal has exported over 430 million barrels of ethane since 2021, according to Energy Transfer. The company also noted that its existing and planned refrigerated storage at the site, including a 1.3 million barrel ethane tank, propane storage expanding to 1.2 million barrels, and butane storage expanding to 0.8 million barrels, will represent the largest refrigerated NGL storage capacity of any export complex on the U.S. Gulf Coast. The propane and butane storage expansions are expected available in the first half of 2027. The broader Nederland expansion will enter service in stages beginning in 2028.
Energy Transfer expects to invest $5 billion to $5.5 billion in growth projects this year, according to its Q4 2025 report filed February 17, 2026.
What It Means for Subcontractors
- Pipeline and terminal mechanical work is coming. The expansion includes new export pipeline capacity from Mont Belvieu to Nederland, two new ship docks, and staged facility buildout through 2029. Mechanical, piping, and marine construction contractors in Southeast Texas should be tracking procurement activity now.
- Storage tank construction is an early opportunity. Refrigerated propane and butane storage expansions are targeted for the first half of 2027, meaning that work is likely entering engineering and contractor selection phases in the near term. Tank builders and insulation contractors should position accordingly.
- Mont Belvieu is also active. A new 3-million-barrel ethane storage cavern at Energy Transfer’s Mont Belvieu fractionation complex is under construction and expected in service in the second half of 2027. Civil, underground, and specialty contractors in the Houston area have a parallel opportunity.
- Long phasing means sustained work. With project milestones spread from 2027 through 2029, subcontractors can anticipate multi-year engagement rather than a single construction push. Electrical, instrumentation, and civil trades should factor this timeline into capacity planning.
- Prequalification matters early. With long-term offtake agreements already signed and capital committed, Energy Transfer is likely to move quickly on contractor qualification. Field service companies without existing relationships at Nederland or Mont Belvieu should initiate outreach to prime contractors now.
