Chesapeake Utilities Plans $1.2B Gas Pipeline for South Florida

A Reuters report via Pipeline-Journal.net details Chesapeake Utilities Corp.โ€™s plan to build a $1.2 billion intrastate natural gas pipeline connecting Palm Beach County to Miami-Dade County, aiming to shore up energy supply in South Florida.

Market Impact

The project, called the Florida Energy Pathway, calls for a 24-inch pipeline that will be developed, built, and operated by Peninsula Pipeline Co., a Chesapeake Utilities subsidiary. The line is backed by firm transportation commitments of nearly 250,000 dekatherms per day from multiple investment-grade shippers, with supply flowing from Florida Gas Transmissionโ€™s planned Phase IX expansion. Peninsula Pipeline is still soliciting additional binding commitments from shippers.

Chesapeake Utilities says the project is one of the largest organic growth investments in company history and builds on its expanding Florida presence following its acquisition of Florida City Gas. The company is evaluating financing options and plans to bring in one or more partners to hold up to a 49% ownership stake. Chesapeake expects to enter service in 2030, pending regulatory approvals and final commissioning, and says it will share more details, including long-term capital investment plans, during its second-quarter earnings call in August.

What It Means for Subcontractors

  • Civil and pipeline construction firms in Palm Beach and Miami-Dade counties should prepare for right-of-way and easement acquisition work as Peninsula Pipeline moves toward regulatory filings ahead of the 2030 in-service target.
  • Welding, pipefitting, and HDD crews should track FEED-stage engineering announcements expected around Chesapeakeโ€™s Q2 earnings call in August, when the company plans to release additional project and capital investment details.
  • Firms with investment-grade shipper relationships or gas utility experience in Florida may find early positioning opportunities as Peninsula Pipeline continues soliciting binding transportation commitments beyond the current 250,000 dekatherms per day.
  • Companies capable of large-diameter (24-inch) pipeline installation should monitor for EPC packages tied to the project, since a financing partner covering up to 49% ownership has not yet been finalized and could shift project scheduling.
  • Local trades in South Florida, including electrical and instrumentation contractors, should watch for downstream tie-in work tied to Florida Gas Transmissionโ€™s Phase IX expansion, which will supply the new line.
