Brampton's $106M Riverwalk Project Opens Doors for Heavy Civil Subcontractors
Brampton, Ontarioโs Riverwalk flood protection project is now under construction, with crews widening and deepening Etobicoke Creekโs 1952 concrete channel and building three new bridges through downtown, Daily Commercial News reports. The cityโs preliminary cost estimate for the flood protection phase is $106 million, with AECOM serving as lead engineering consultant and EllisDon as construction manager. Preliminary work began in fall 2025 with utility relocation and demolition of city-owned properties. The main channel work, covering roughly 600 meters from Church Street to John Street, is set to start late this fall and take two years, widening the channel from 20 to 50 meters and excavating 1.2 meters at the deepest point. The 38-meter Church Street Bridge goes in this year, with the Scott and Queen Street bridges following in 2027. Phase one is due for completion in 2028, after which the city will move into a second phase covering parks, trails, homes and business areas along the corridor.

- Heavy civil and excavation crews should note the fall 2026 start date for channel work requiring excavators, loaders, dump trucks, drill rigs, cranes, dewatering units and pumps over a two-year, 600-meter stretch.
- Concrete subcontractors have a clear scope: demolition of 75-year-old concrete channel walls followed by installation of new concrete panels and armoured rock, plus structural work on three new bridges (Church, Scott, and Queen Street) built in 2026 and 2027.
- Utility relocation and road-building trades can bid into near-term work tied to the new Ken Whillans Drive, which is set to begin construction shortly and runs parallel to the creek realignment.
- Landscaping, trail-building, and site development subcontractors should track the cityโs phase two urban design master plan, which follows phase oneโs 2028 completion and covers new parks, open spaces, and business areas, though costs for that phase have not yet been determined.
