Industry Glossary Term

Gas Processing Plant

Facility that strips raw natural gas of water, impurities and natural gas liquids before pipeline transport. Subcontractors here handle instrumentation, mechanical and electrical work under strict process safety rules. Turnarounds at these plants often mean tight schedules and large multi-crew mobilizations.

Related Terms

NUCA (National Utility Contractors Association)

Industry

A U.S. trade association representing underground utility and excavation contractors. For subcontractors, membership signals credibility and provides access to training, advocacy, and industry standards. Useful when bidding on American utility projects requiring recognised affiliations.

OD (Outer Diameter)

Industry

The measurement across the outside of a pipe, casing, or tubular component. Subcontractors use OD to specify compatible fittings, tools, and equipment on job sites. Mismatched ODs can cause costly delays and safety issues in the field.

Deep Foundation

Industry

A structural support system that transfers building loads to stable soil or rock far below the surface, typically using piles or caissons. Subcontractors are often mobilised for drilling, pile driving, or concrete work on these scopes. Expect specialised equipment requirements and strict geotechnical inspection protocols on site.

Precast Concrete Panels

Industry

Factory-manufactured concrete sections delivered to site ready for installation. Subcontractors handle lifting, positioning, and anchoring rather than forming and pouring. Speeds up schedules but requires certified rigging crews and heavy lift equipment.

Excavation and Embankment

Industry

Earthwork scope covering cut (excavation) and fill (embankment) operations on a project site. Subcontractors are often paid on a unit-rate basis per cubic metre of material moved. Accurate quantity tracking is critical for proper invoicing and dispute avoidance.

Generating Capacity (gw)

Industry

The maximum electrical output a power facility can produce, measured in gigawatts (GW). For subcontractors, project scale and crew size requirements are often tied directly to a facility's GW rating. Larger GW projects typically mean longer scopes, more mobilisations, and greater equipment demands.
