Strathcona Hits First Steam at Meota Central Thermal Project

Strathcona Resources Ltd. achieved first steam at its Meota Central thermal project on June 6, 2026, with construction now complete and first oil expected late in the third quarter of 2026, according to a company release carried by BOE Report. The Calgary-based heavy oil producer said the project came in at approximately $345 million, about 3% under budget, and finished two months ahead of the original 18-month schedule. Strathcona logged zero lost time incidents across roughly 370,000 man-hours of construction work. Meota Central, tapping the Waseca reservoir, is targeting a peak rate of about 13,000 bbls/d by mid-2027 and carries an estimated 30-year reserves life at nameplate capacity. The project is part of Strathconaโ€™s broader push to grow corporate production from about 125 Mbbls/d in 2026 to 300 Mbbls/d by 2035. The company is hosting analysts and investors for a field tour of Meota Central and its Hamlin Rail Terminal on July 9, 2026.

What It Means for Subcontractors

  • Meota Centralโ€™s completion (370,000 man-hours, zero lost-time incidents) shows Strathcona running large-scale, safety-focused thermal builds in the Lloydminster corridor, a useful safety benchmark for crews bidding future SAGD-style work in the region.
  • With first oil targeted for late Q3 2026 and peak rates by mid-2027, expect ongoing commissioning, facility ramp-up, and maintenance subcontract needs at the Meota site through 2027.
  • Strathconaโ€™s stated growth plan to more than double production to 300 Mbbls/d by 2035 signals a pipeline of additional thermal projects in the Lloydminster area, worth tracking for civil, mechanical, and E&I subcontract packages as new phases move to construction.
