Skanska-Traylor-Walsh JV Wins $1B Design-Build Contract for Second Avenue Subway Phase II Station

According to Engineering News-Record, New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority has awarded a $1.02-billion design-build contract to a joint venture of Skanska, Traylor Bros., and Walsh Construction to excavate and build the structural shell for the future 106th Street station, the third of four major contracts on the $7.7-billion Second Avenue Subway Phase II extension. The project will extend Q line service north from 96th Street to 125th Street and Lexington Avenue in Manhattan.

What It Means for Subcontractors

  • A fourth contract covering station finishes, track, signals, power, and communications systems is still in design, meaning significant MEP and systems subcontract opportunities are approaching.
  • Utility relocation work near 106th Street is already active under Contract 1, and a separate $1.97-billion tunneling package was awarded last year, so civil and underground trade subs should be engaging prime contractors now.
  • The MTA’s phased procurement strategy is designed to reduce cost and construction risk, which typically means tighter scopes and more defined subcontract packages for each trade.
