Pittsburgh's 22M-lb Bridge Slide Signals Growing Market for Heavy-Move Specialists
A 22-million-pound steel arch bridge moved 102 feet sideways in under 10 hours, and the contractors who pulled it off just proved thereโs real money in a niche skill set most subcontractors never touch. ENR reports that crews with Fay, S&B US Construction completed the demolition and slide-in of the new Commercial Street Bridge in Pittsburghโs Frick Park in just 17 days, about half the time allotted for the Interstate 376 closure, with the new span opening to traffic on July 27.
Background
The project replaced an 846-foot-long, 75-year-old concrete arch bridge that could no longer handle permit loads while carrying 100,000 vehicles a day, according to ENR. The Pennsylvania Dept. of Transportation wanted a replacement that preserved the arched aesthetic the public associated with the original structure, but a true arch bridge carries heavy horizontal thrust forces that complicate a slide-in move. HDR, the project designer, resolved that with an arched delta frame design that kept the look while cutting the thrust load, according to Nicholas Burdette, HDRโs Northeast region bridge leader, cited by ENR.
Fay won the roughly $95 million design-bid-build contract in 2024, with the slide portion structured as a design-build package alongside COWI, ENR reports. Rigging specialist Mammoet supplied a custom system of 42 skid โshoesโ positioned across the bridge piers and abutments rather than relying on the self-propelled modular transporters typically used in accelerated bridge construction (ABC), because of limited workspace and the sheer weight of the load. Mammoet stated in a release cited by ENR that this was the heaviest bridge it has ever moved in the U.S., and that it plans to deploy the same skid system on other American projects.
Before the slide, blasting contractor Veit drilled roughly 2,500 holes into the old bridgeโs three arch spans for controlled demolition charges, ENR reports. PennDOT closed the old bridge on July 10, conventional demolition began at the deck center, the blast occurred July 16, and the slide-in began three days later. The hydraulic skid shoes lifted the new structure about 10 inches, pushed it forward on rail lines, and set it onto permanent bearings within 1-inch tolerances, a process that took less than 10 hours, according to ENR. The contractor earned about $2 million in hourly incentives for the accelerated schedule, per district executive Jason Zang.
Analysis
This project is a case study in what happens when an owner refuses to accept the standard tradeoff between speed and structural complexity. PennDOTโs other option, Zang told ENR, was three phases of construction and four years of traffic headaches. Instead, the agency paid for a compressed, high-risk, high-precision slide-in, and the market responded with a bespoke rigging solution built specifically for this bridgeโs geometry and weight.
The bigger signal for the industry is Mammoetโs own comment that it now intends to bring this skid-shoe system to other U.S. projects. That is a company telegraphing demand. Heavy civil owners around the country are sitting on aging arch and truss bridges that canโt be closed for years at a time without political and economic fallout. If a 22-million-pound structure can move 102 feet in under 10 hours with 1-inch tolerances, that capability becomes a selling point for every DOT with a similar structural and traffic problem.
The trial slide requirement built into the contract is also worth noting. Crews rehearsed the move in June before the real event in July, catching refinements that changed how the final operation ran. That is a procurement detail other owners are likely to copy: expect more ABC contracts to mandate a full-scale trial run as a deliverable, not just an internal contractor decision. Subcontractors who can plan, staff, and price a trial slide as a distinct scope item will have an edge in bidding these jobs.
The demolition sequencing matters too. Crews had to run conventional demolition equipment across the deck while protecting a new substructure built directly beneath the old one, with only 20 feet of clearance in places. That kind of tight-tolerance, mixed-method demolition (conventional plus explosive) alongside live substructure protection is a specialized coordination problem, not routine wrecking work.
What It Means for Subcontractors
- Heavy-rigging and skid-system subs should approach Mammoet and similar specialty riggers now about subcontracting or partnering on future ABC slide-ins, since Mammoet has stated publicly it plans to reuse this skid-shoe system on other U.S. projects.
- Demolition contractors with combined blasting and conventional demolition capability should highlight tight-tolerance, mixed-method jobs (Veitโs 2,500-hole blast pattern under a 20-foot clearance) as a qualifying case study when bidding DOT bridge-replacement RFPs.
- Steel erectors should note the delta-frame assembly method used by Amelie Construction, building triangular girders sideways and tipping them up in a two-crane pick, as a marketable technique for complex arch or truss superstructure work.
- Structural and geotechnical subs should watch for more state DOTs requiring a full-scale trial slide as a contract deliverable, similar to the June trial run PennDOT mandated before the July 19 slide, and price that scope separately in future ABC bids.
