According to World Oil, Kongsberg Maritime, Seadrill and Hanwha Drilling have formed a strategic alliance to develop remote dynamic positioning (DP) technology for offshore drilling operations. The collaboration aims to create systems where vessel positioning can be monitored and controlled from centralized onshore locations rather than entirely from the drilling rig.

The partnership combines Kongsberg’s automation and communication technologies with the operational experience of offshore drilling contractors Seadrill and Hanwha Drilling. Dynamic positioning systems maintain the precise location of offshore drilling units without anchors, particularly critical during deepwater operations.

What It Means for Subcontractors

  • Marine service companies may see demand for new technical skills as remote DP systems require different crew training and support capabilities
  • Offshore support contractors could face changes in crew requirements as centralized systems reduce onboard workload while creating new onshore monitoring roles
  • Technology service providers may find opportunities in supporting the communication and automation infrastructure needed for remote DP operations
