ODOT Approves $7.3B Eight-Year Plan With 1,229 Highway and Bridge Projects
Oklahomaโs Transportation Commission approved a $7.3 billion plan covering 1,229 highway and bridge projects across the state for Federal Fiscal Years 2027-2034, OK Energy Today reports.
Market Impact
The Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) released the Eight-Year Construction Work Plan on Monday. The plan includes 596 miles of rural two-lane highway improvements and addresses 2,980 lane-miles of pavement in fair or poor condition. It also covers 188 at-risk bridges and 10 structurally deficient bridges.
Named projects include the I-40 bridges over the Arkansas River in Muskogee County and the US-259 widening between Broken Bow and Hochatown. Others are the I-35/SH-74 interchange modifications in Goldsby, the I-40 interchange modifications in Elk City and shoulder widening on US-64 west of Jet. The list also includes I-35 widening from the Red River to Springer, more work at I-35 and I-240 in Oklahoma City, and a new US-75 interchange at 106th St. N. in Tulsa.
Costs are a constraint. ODOT says DOTs nationwide have absorbed nearly 18 yearsโ worth of inflation since 2020, and that has pushed several projects beyond the eight-year window. โInflationary pressure and fiscal constraints are limiting the departmentโs ability to properly address the growing needs of our transportation system,โ said Secretary of Transportation and ODOT Executive Director Tim Gatz. Deferred projects stay in development so they can move forward if funding becomes available.
The Commission also received the updated four-year Asset Preservation Plan for FY2027-2030. It lists 287 projects totaling $520 million, covering 1,916 lane-miles of pavement, 29 accessibility needs, six structurally deficient bridges and 53 bridges at risk of becoming structurally deficient.
What It Means for Subcontractors
- Pull the project list now. ODOTโs interactive map is on odot.org under โPrograms and Projects,โ then โ8-Year ODOT Construction Projects.โ It covers both plans. Sort by county and fiscal year, and flag the projects in your district for FFY2027 and FFY2028 first.
- Match your trade to the named corridors. Bridge and structures subs should look at the Muskogee County I-40 Arkansas River crossings. Grading, paving and traffic-control crews have I-35 (Red River to Springer, Goldsby, I-35/I-240), Elk City, US-259 and the Tulsa US-75 interchange. Traffic control demand follows any of these major corridor projects.
- Target the near-term preservation work. The FY2027-2030 Asset Preservation Plan averages roughly $1.8 million per project across 287 projects (our math from the sourceโs totals). That scale suits smaller paving, rehab and ADA-accessibility crews better than the large interchange jobs.
- Rural two-lane and bridge volume is the steady base. The 596 miles of two-lane improvements and 188 at-risk bridges point to repeat shoulder, resurfacing and bridge repair packages rather than a few mega-jobs.
- Price in schedule and cost risk. Inflation has already pushed projects out of the window, so donโt build backlog forecasts on year-seven and year-eight listings. Escalation clauses and material pricing matter on anything bid this cycle.
- Check your bid eligibility before the lettings. The source does not list letting dates, prequalification rules or DBE requirements. Confirm your ODOT prequalification status and DBE partners on ODOTโs site before targeting specific projects, since eligibility gates who can bid on or team for the lettings.
