ODOT Awards 8 Contracts Worth $125M+ in Interstate, Bridge Work
The Oklahoma Transportation Commission awarded eight contracts totaling more than $125 million at its Nov. 2 meeting for interstate, highway and bridge work statewide, OK Energy Today reports.
Market Impact
Winning contractors and per-project dollar values were not included in the announcement. The full list of awarded contracts is available at the ODOT Business Center. The commission is a nine-member body appointed by the governor and legislative leadership, and it awards road and bridge construction contracts monthly. Its next meeting is set for 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 7.
Inflation was a major theme of the meeting. ODOT Interim Executive Director T.J. Dill briefed commissioners on an interim legislative study, sponsored by Sen. Darcy Jech, on inflationary pressure in transportation construction. Dill said the study showed how heavy highway construction costs differ from the consumer price index. โItโs not going to change the way we continue to manage our system. Itโs going to change the way that we invest the funds that we are given,โ he said. He added that inflation and rising costs are affecting how ODOT decides which projects to build and how it maintains the system.
Commissioners were also briefed on a US-69 pavement reconstruction in Muskogee that began Oct. 30. Crews demolished an old railroad bridge that carried a local trail over the highway, closing all lanes for less than 14 hours. US-69 is now one lane each direction for the two-year project, which is expected to run until fall 2028. The work will widen the corridor to six lanes and replace the bridge with one offering more highway clearance. The contractor was not named, and it is unclear whether this job was part of the Nov. 2 awards.
What It Means for Subcontractors
- Identify the eight primes first. Pull the awarded-contract list from the ODOT Business Center now. The announcement doesnโt say which firms won or which projects are interstate Paving, bridge and structural subs can then sort the primes by trade fit.
- Call primes while packages are likely open. These awards were made Nov. 2, so sub and supplier packages are likely being finalized in the coming weeks (our inference). Send pre-qualification paperwork and unit-price quotes to the awarded primes before the Dec. 7 commission meeting adds another round of awards.
- Price for cost escalation. Dill said inflation is changing how ODOT invests its funds. Re-check material and labor escalation clauses in any bid or quote that carries into 2027, especially on multi-year work.
- Treat US-69 in Muskogee as a long-running opportunity. The two-year, six-lane widening and bridge replacement runs to fall 2028. Traffic control, paving, bridge and trail-related subs should identify the prime through the ODOT Business Center and ask about remaining scopes. Utility-relocation crews should ask about coordination on the widened corridor (our inference; the source doesnโt mention utilities).
- Expect lane restrictions. US-69 will stay at one lane each way through the project, with SH-165 and US-62 as bypass routes. Plan crew and equipment routing around Muskogee accordingly.
