New CHPE Line Pushes NY-Canada Power Trade to 18-Month High
The U.S. Energy Information Administration reports that New York pulled 52 gigawatthours of electricity from Canada on July 3, the highest cross-border volume since January 2025, as the newly commissioned Champlain Hudson Power Express (CHPE) line ran at full capacity during a regional heat wave. The 1,250 MW line, connecting Hydro-Québec to New York City, reached commercial operations in May after three years of construction. On July 3, Canadian imports covered 9% of NYISO demand, with 1,400 MW per hour flowing from Hydro-Québec and 800 MW per hour from Ontario’s grid operator. The line was fully utilized that day but was taken offline again on July 4 for repairs after an earlier outage in June. NYSERDA projects CHPE could eventually meet up to 20% of New York City’s power demand.
What It Means for Subcontractors
- E&I and civil crews working transmission maintenance should expect continued repair and punch-list work on CHPE given the June outage and the July 4 shutdown, a sign the line isn’t yet running trouble-free.
- Firms with HVDC or underground/underwater cable experience should track NYISO and Hydro-Québec announcements for follow-on interconnection work, since both ISO-New England and NYISO have built new Quebec-linked lines that could see expanded use if hydro generation recovers from recent drought conditions.
- Electrical contractors bidding grid-support projects in the New York City area should note CHPE’s stated 20% demand-offset target from NYSERDA, a figure likely to drive additional substation and interconnection upgrade packages as the line ramps toward full reliability.
